Rumor: Nintendo Planning Smaller Switch 2 Cart Sizes As Alternative To Game-Key Cards
Earlier this year, Nintendo introduced Game-Key Cards, a new type of game cartridge that does not include actual game, but a license to download any play a digital version from the eshop.
Much to the dismay of those who prefer physical games, many developers and even Nintendo themselves are quickly adopting Game-Key cards for their physical releases. At the moment, it is believed that the reason for this is that Switch 2 carts are only being produced in 64GB storage sizes, forcing developers to pay high costs even if their game is nowhere near that size. This makes Game-Key cards an enticing alternative for these developers, among other reasons.
However, rumors have now surfaced that Nintendo is working on producing Switch 2 carts in smaller sizes, specifically 16GB and 32GB. Presumably, these smaller cart sizes would serve as less expensive alternatives to Game-Key cards for developers, allowing them to once again release physical games that are actually on the cart.
Heard big rumors for physical Switch 2 games. Sounds like new card sizes (16 GB & 32 GB) might finally be on the menu. Certainly not this year, and it remains to be seen if/how it will affect prices, margins and the willingness from publishers to release games properly. pic.twitter.com/z8JkbsMIqW

I’ve just had some interesting information. Apparently Nintendo is now offering smaller cartridge sizes for Nintendo Switch 2. I don’t know any more details other than that but I think it’s potentially great news for physicals on Switch 2.

I can confirm that smaller capacity Switch 2 game cards are in production but due to chip shortages it will take time before we see widespread availability
Despite the smaller capacity, these cards will still be expensive due to rising cost of materials

That said, Game-Key cards will likely remain the most cost-effective form of physical release for publishers, and the go-to option for those who wish to maintain good profit margins. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
