Last month, Game Freak was hit by a massive data breach which reportedly included several internal design materials for past Pokemon games.
Some new documents have surfaced from this breach revealing that Game Freak was seemingly planning to create a third version for Pokemon X and Y called “Pokemon Z”. This reveal confirms a longstanding rumor within the Pokemon community, which contributed to the immense excitement surrounding Pokemon Legends Z-A when it was announced.
More specifically, a “Z Version” is referenced in several design documents related to Zygarde, the third major legendary Pokemon from X and Y alongside Xerneas and Yveltal. These design documents detail plans to give Zygarde additional forms in the hypothetical Z version. It would have received two forms based on its role of maintaining balance amongst the trio, one quadrapedal form meant to counter Xerneas, and another humanoid form meant to counter Yveltal. It is believed that this concept was eventually reworked into Zygarde 10% form and 100% form respectively.
At the time of this writing, it is not known for certain why “Pokemon Z” was scrapped, and it is among many pieces of scrapped content from Pokemon X and Y that were uncovered through the leak. As with all reports of this nature however, we caution readers to take them with a grain of salt. Stay tuned for more as it comes.
