For the past few months, rumors have been swirling about the successor to the Nintendo Switch, which Nintendo plans to officially reveal before the next fiscal year.
This latest rumor comes via Famiboards (via the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit), attributed to the same user who shared a drawing of what the console and dock looked like.
In a coded message, the user claimed that Nintendo’s initial launch shipment for the Switch 2 is “roughly 2.5 times the volume from March 2017.”, referring to the original Switch’s first launch shipment. The initial shipment of the Switch console was 2.7 million units, making the rumored Switch 2 launch shipment between 6.5 ~ 7 million units.
A launch shipment of this size is extremely large. By comparison, the Playstation 4’s launch shipment was 2.1 million consoles for its first 2 weeks, while the Playstation 5’s launch shipment is slightly higher than that. Presumably, Nintendo is trying to avoid a situation where fans are unable to get their hands on the console on launch, forcing them to resort to scalpers like with some other gaming hardware.
That said, as with all rumors of this nature, we caution readers to take this with a grain of salt. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
