After three years, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has officially ended active development, holding within it the largest and most diverse roster of characters the series had to date.
In an interview with The Verge, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai shared a bit more of his thoughts about working on Ultimate, as well as what a potential future installment might look like.
According to Sakurai, a hypothetical future entry might have to dial back on the amount of content and fighters, although they would need to consider how fans might react if this were to happen.
I think we’ve reached the limit, at least in terms of volume of content and fighters. Basically, if I were to have the opportunity to work on another Super Smash Bros. game, that means we would have to shrink the roster, but we need to think about whether fans would be pleased about that.
In addition, Sakurai explained that he felt like Ultimate had “too much of his personality” in it, and that for the series to continue, it would have to be less dependent on his own solo vision, although this would also present its own set of challenges.
Also, I’ve been doing too much of the work myself, so I’d need to resolve that, too. The current Super Smash Bros. has too much of my personality poured into it. In order for a long-time series to continue thriving today, we need to think about eliminating the series’ dependence on just one person’s vision.
Of course, this is the way it is now because we weren’t successful in splitting the vision between multiple people before. This would be a challenge for the future and something that needs to be discussed with Nintendo, if there were to be a next installment in the Super Smash Bros. series.
Ultimately, it seems that Nintendo and Sakurai have yet to make a concrete decision about the future of Smash, and it seems like it might be a long time before we get any news of a new installment, if it happens at all. Stay tuned for more info as it comes.
