Sakurai: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Was Built On Top Of The Previous Game

Masahiro Sakurai has revealed a couple more details about the development of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in his weekly column.

According to the producer, the project plan for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was completed in December 2015, when DLC for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U were still in development. Deciding on who to work on the new game was decided later.

The development team had two choices – completely overhauling the feel and system of the game, or building on what they have in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Sakurai went with the latter and explained if they went with the former, the roster would be one third of its current size.

Of course, although Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was built on top of the previous game in the series, there are some changes to how the game feels. For instance, overall speed has increased, knockback speed has increased, initial velocity of all jumps have been improved, and landing lag has decreased across the board.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime told the press last week these changes are just enough to call Super Smash Bros. Ultimate a completely new and original title rather than a port.
