Sakurai’s Famitsu Column: 3.0.0. Update, Custom Stages, And His Vision For Smash Ultimate

Earlier today, the latest edition of Sakurai’s Weekly Column for Famitsu magazine was translated online.

In the column, Sakurai revealed more about his thought process when designing Super Smash Bros Ultimate. He discusses his reasons for adding the new “Sharing” feature, as well as a few of ideas that didn’t quite make the cut.

Check it out below, courtesy of Pushdustin on Twitter:

  • Sakurai didn’t want a game where only the winners of battles can have fun. So he didn’t want Smash to just have fighting.
  • When writing the Smash Ultimate project plan he had three main ideas he wanted to focus on. “Fighting”, “Sharing” and “Fighting Together”
  • “Fighting Together” is something that was difficult to see in Smash Ultimate.
    • Options like fighting with 4 players online, using the CPU and 4 player Spirit Battles were ways that this idea was going to be utilized, but there are limits.
  • The “Sharing” aspect of Smash Ultimate took the staff extra time to prepare because of the testing and debugging that they had to add it in via an update.
    • While writing the column, Sakurai checks out some stages and is having a good time. There are some good ideas and he’s laughing.
  • Sakurai is looking forward to seeing the movies that the community creates.
    • It’s truly something to have the editing tools in Smash Ultimate.
  • Sakurai asks everyone to follow the rules and community standards – – especially since they are letting players can upload directly

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
