A 28 year old scalper who makes 400,000 yen (USD3700) a month and lives in Japan was recently interviewed by NicoNico and gave some interesting thoughts on the current Nintendo Switch and Animal Crossing: New Horizons shortages in Japan.
First, the scalper says that the Nintendo Switch has always been a “very hot product” from the beginning, and the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons was an even bigger blessing from heaven. He quipped that the Nintendo Switch Animal Crossing: New Horizons Edition, which retails for around 40,000 yen, could be sold at an immense profit, essentially doubling what he paid for the console.
Next, he spoke about amiibo cards, which were released during the Nintendo 3DS lifecycle. As Animal Crossing: New Horizons allows players to summon their favorite characters, amiibo cards have become a hot commodity, making them hard to find. The scalper says he “couldn’t stop laughing” as he’s making over 10,000 yen (USD93+) for a card he paid 100 yen (USD0.93) for.
Lastly, the scalper spoke about the methods he used to profit from Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the Nintendo Switch. Besides signing up for online lotteries which give customers a chance to buy the console, he heads to smaller and less well-known game shops, where he could purchase the Nintendo Switch without much problems. He says he has been able to buy at least one console a day this way. The scalper also “kills two birds with one stone” by shopping for amiibo and amiibo cards at the same shops.
Here’s how the Japanese reacted to the story:
“Why couldn’t he work a normal job?”
“Please show us your income tax statement.”
“Scalpers are trash, and those who buy from scalpers are equally trash.”
“Let’s get the tax agency to swat him like how they do it in America.”
