Earlier this month, Shantae And The Seven Sirens released on Switch, the fifth installment in the Half-Genie Hero’s now 18-year old series dating back to the Game Boy Color era.
From these humble beginnings, Shantae has since become a major gaming icon and representative of the indie scene. Speaking to Comicbook.com, WayForward’s Matt Bozon shared his thoughts on the character’s success, and dropped the reveal that her series has recently crossed 3 million in sales:
Yes. Shantae fans are awesome. They have this increasing demand that keeps us constantly moving. Honestly, we’ve been so busy that we sometimes forget that she’s having these milestone moments. For example, last year marked 25 years since we created Shantae! And somewhere along the line she broke 3 million copies sold, but, now that I think about it, we didn’t celebrate when it reached 1 million. I guess this…right now…we can celebrate with a TOOT! If fans keep commenting, streaming, posting fanart, Shantae will keep growing and we’ll never get a chance to slow down. And that would be amazing!
