Previously, we reported that Splatoon 2 recently crossed 3 million total sales according to Famitsu. This currently makes it the highest selling game on the Switch in Japan, but a closer look at Famitsu’s sales data suggests that a challenger may be approaching.
The challenger is none other than Super Smash Bros Ultimate, the biggest crossover in Nintendo history. According to Famitsu’s sales data from last week, Smash Ultimate currently sits at just over 2.95 million total sales, just 50,000 units behind Splatoon 2. Other outlets have the gap much closer, with Media Create reporting that Smash Ultimate is only 10,000 units behind, though it should be noted that this is because Media Create’s figures list Splatoon’s total sales as 2.96 million.
While 50,000 units might seem like a big number, Smash Ultimate has been selling almost three times faster than Splatoon 2 in Japan over the past three weeks according to Famitsu. Furthermore, while Splatoon 2’s content updates have slowed down for the most part, Smash Ultimate has quite a bit of DLC and updates on the way. With these factors in play, its not unlikely that we’ll be seeing Smash Ultimate overtake Splatoon 2 in total sales pretty soon, dethroning it as the best selling Switch game in Japan.
