The SNES Classic Has The Same Hardware As The NES Classic

If you were wondering what is powering the technology behind the SNES Classic Edition, we finally have an answer.

According to Eurogamer which did a teardown of the system, the insides of the SNES Classic Edition are completely identical to the NES Classic Edition which released last year.

Further investigation shows that the internal mainboard looks exactly the same. The SNES Classic uses a Allwinner R16 SoC (system on chip), which features four ARM Cortex A7s paired with an ARM Mali 400 MP2 GPU. A Hynix 256MB DDR3 module is used for NAND storage, giving the system 512MB of space.

As for the software side of things, SNES emulation software has been installed on every SNES Classic Edition. The software not only emulates SNES software but also the Super FX chips that are required to run titles like Yoshi’s Island.

Eurogamer speculates that the emulator has been coded ground up by Nintendo’s European Research and Development, which is based in Paris.

As the SNES Classic Edition uses the same hardware as the NES Classic Edition, hackers will be able to modify the system to add extra games. On the other hand, it makes production easier for Nintendo when it’s time to produce the NES Classic Edition reprints next summer.

The SNES Classic Edition launches on September 29, 2017 in North America and Europe.
