Following last year’s adventurous Sonic Frontiers, SEGA has been revisiting the blue blurs roots with his games in 2023, with Sonic Origins Plus being a collection of past titles, and Sonic Superstars being a new game made in the classic style.
In a recent interview with Famitsu, SEGA President and Chief Operations Officer Yukio Sugino hinted that even more classic revivals could be in the works for Sonic and SEGA’s other IPs.
As translated via Dualshockers, SEGA carefully considers the creation of new games or reboots based on which is the most appropriate for the IP, going on to say that “reboots and remakes” for Sonic are in the works due to his status as SEGA’s “signature IP”.
“Of course, we have to do new things, but as with all IPs, we don’t have new works or reboots. We will develop while selecting which is appropriate at this timing for each IP, such as ‘This is the best way to do this IP’. ‘Sonic’ is also SEGA’s signature IP, and in parallel with the new game, we are considering reboots and remakes.”
As an aside, Sugino also discussed the reception of Sonic Frontiers, which is a major departure from the classic games in terms of gameplay. According to Sugino, the game’s sales figures exceeded his expectations, and he expressed gratitude to the fanbase for its success, mentioning that he received messages from North American fans saying that “Sonic is heading in the right direction”.
“That in itself [Sonic Frontiers’ sales figures] makes me happy, and I was also happy to receive a lot of messages, mainly from users in North America, such as ‘I’m very happy that Sonic is heading in the right direction,'”
