Sony Group Corporation, the company behind Playstation, is reportedly in talks to acquire Kadokawa Corporation.
The report comes via Reuters and is corroborated by a separate report from Nikkei. Reuters claims that talks are ongoing, and a deal could be signed “in the coming weeks” if successful, while Nikkei claims that talks are in the “early stages”. Sony already owns 2% stake in Kadokawa, as well as a 14.9% stake in Kadokawa owned FromSoftware. Both Sony and Kadokawa declined to comment when asked the potential acquisition.
Kadokawa Corporation holds many subsidiaries across gaming, film, animation, novels, and other pop culture. With regards to gaming, their subsidiaries include the aforementioned FromSoftware (Elden Ring), Spike Chunsoft (Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Nastu-Mon), and more recently, ACQUIRE (Octopath Traveler, Mario & Luigi Brothership). Many fans are worried that if Sony’s acquisition goes through, it could mean that all the developers under Kadokawa will only be allowed to make Playstation exclusive games, leaving other platforms out to dry.
At the time of this writing however, nothing of the sort has been confirmed officially. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
