Sony’s PlayStation 4 Has Overtaken The Nintendo Wii In Lifetime Sales
As most gaming fans will know, the Nintendo Wii launched in 2006 and became a massive hit amongst families – moving more than 101 million consoles in its entire lifetime. That amazing track record, however, appears to have been smashed once more.
According to Sony’s second-quarter earnings report, the PlayStation 4 has sold 102.8 million units worldwide so far. This makes it the second-bestselling console of all time, pushing down the Wii to fourth place. Additionally, this means that the top three consoles now belong to Sony – with the PlayStation 1 at third place (102.49 million) and PlayStation 2 at first place (155 million).
It’s definitely an impressive feat for Sony. Nevertheless, the PS4’s sales still pale in comparison to Nintendo’s handhelds such as the Game Boy and DS. With the Nintendo Switch offering both portability and console-grade gaming nowadays, it’ll be interesting to see how it stacks up to PS4 is a couple of years’ time!
