Despite a great showing at E3 2018, Sony found itself in a precarious situation when it comes to cross-play and cross-platform compatibility. Despite allowing Fortnite users to cross-play on PC, Mac, and iOS, it was found out earlier this week by millions of Fortnite players on the Switch that Sony is not only restricting cross-play between the PlayStation and other consoles, it is also stopping players who have linked their Fortnite accounts with PlayStation from playing on their Switch consoles.
This caused quite a bit of backlash among Fortnite gamers around as this means that PlayStation linked accounts won’t be able to bring over their purchases to their games on the Switch. This uproar has caused Sony’s stock prices to fall by 2%.
Sony has since responded to the matter with a nonanswer.
“We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms. We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point.”
Sony has continually refused to play nice with other consoles when it comes to cross-play, believing that their ecosystem is robust enough to sustain on its own.
