We have some awful news concerning the state of Splatoon 2’s online multiplayer today.
Homebrew community leader OatmealDome reports that there are a number of hackers going around launching Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks against their opponents in Splatoon 2 League Battles. DoS attacks are a common tactic used to take down websites, but this time, hackers are using DoS attacks to disconnect their opponents. By disconnecting their opponents, the hackers quickly raise their rank to Rank 1 on the leaderboards.
Under normal circumstances, DoS attacks have no effect in online matches. DoS attacks like this work due to Splatoon 2’s peer-to-peer netcode, as the game reveals your IP address to all players in the same online match.
OatmealDome has suggested players to report hackers on the SplatNet 2 app via the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, and advised everyone not to harass the hackers as “it’s not worth it”.
