Square-Enix: Dragon Quest XI Is Selling Better On PS4 Than 3DS In Japan

During Square-Enix’s recent financial call, the company revealed a few more details about Dragon Quest XI’s sales in Japan.

Based on what we know, the game has moved over 3 million copies in Japan on both Nintendo 3DS and PS4. Numbers from Media-Create show the 3DS version leading the pack.

However that’s not what everything seems. Square-Enix told investors they’ve seen “stronger sales” for the PS4 version of the game, and hope sales for the 3DS version will pick up steam.

On July 29, we released “DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age,” which has generated a great customer response and garnered praise for its contents. We have seen stronger sales of the PlayStation®4 version than the NINTENDO 3DS version, but given the installed base, we have high hopes for growth in sales of the NINTENDO 3DS version going forward as well.

Based on what the company has said, they were probably expecting much more copies sold for the 3DS version, given its larger install base and lower price point over the PS4. Both versions are away from each other by less than 300,000 copies.

Q: Do you look likely to reach your target for unit sales of “DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age?” Also, you say that you are seeing strong sales of the PlayStation®4 version, which has a high sales price. Does that mean we can expect sales to beat your plan?

A: We believe that we can reach the lower end of our unit sales plan. Our goal is to reach the upper end of that plan, but we believe that that will depend on how sales of the NINTENDO 3DS version trend going forward.

Dragon Quest XI is planned for launch in the west in 2018. More details will be announced this Fall.
