Square Enix Struggling To Recruit Video Game Developers In Japan

Third party developer and publisher Square Enix told its investors it is having a hard time recruiting video game developers in Japan.

The company said in an investor Q&A that the number of third party studios in Japan capable of making console games is on the decline. Moving forward, Square Enix plans to recruit more developers outside Japan and collaborate with other firms

Q: Could you tell us about your plans to step up your development capabilities under your medium-term plan? In what areas are you planning on bolstering headcount?

A: Concerning HD games, the number of third-party development studios in Japan capable of creating console games is on the decline, and we are struggling to recruit developers. Recruiting resources overseas and collaborating with overseas development firms is going to be key.
