Fanmade Super Mario 64 PC Port Faces Copyright Complaints From Nintendo’s Lawyers

Earlier this week, we reported on the quiet release of a Super Mario 64 port that fans engineered to work on PCs with 4K and ultra widescreen support. While the port has been garnering much praise from gamers and modders alike, however – Nintendo themselves aren’t exactly clapping for the fan project…

US-based law firm Wildwood Law Group LLC, known to work alongside Nintendo often, has reportedly been chasing down copies of the port and slapping host sites with copyright complaints. One complaint sent to Google apparently reads as follows:

“The copyrighted work is Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 video game, including the audio-visual work, software, and fictional character depictions covered by U.S. Copyright Reg. No. PA[REDACTED]”

“The reported file contains an unauthorized derivative work based on Nintendo’s copyrighted work.”

Reportedly, Nintendo has also been targeting videos that demonstrate the PC port in action. For instance, one of the videos we reported on previously is no longer available at all:

Given how widespread the PC port must have traveled by now, however – Nintendo might have a hard time eliminating every copy out on the web. We’ll report back if and when we hear more in the future.
