The Super Mario Bros. Movie recently made its theatrical debut in Japan, where it has done extremely well for its opening weekend.
According to the film’s Japanese distributor Toho, the film brought in around 1.84 billion yen over its opening weekend, which translates to around $13.5 million USD. It was the number 1 movie in Japan for the weekend, and went on to gross an additional 339 million yen on Monday, bringing its total opening earnings to about 2.18 billion yen (nearly $16 million USD).
This achievement has set a number of records for both Illumination and Universal in the country, namely the following:
- Best opening ever for an Illumination movie in Japan, beating out Despicable Me 3 and Secret Life Of Pets
- Best week-end performance ever for Universal, outperforming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
- Fastest-selling movie for Universal, and fastest to reach 2 billion yen in ticket sales
Toho also claims that the film has continued to see strong interest following opening, and with Golden Week in full swing, its likely that its earnings will only continue to grow. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
