Last year, Nintendo and Illumination released their animated Super Mario Bros. Movie to massive commercial success and positive reception from fans.
According to Deadline, the film also turned out to be the most profitable film of 2023, beating out the likes of Barbie and Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse. Deadline’s data says that the film earned a total of $1.36 billion at the global box office, of which $559 million was profit for Nintendo and Illumination. For Illumination, this was not only their most profitable film of all time, but also their highest grossing.
This performance likely spells good news for the future of the Super Mario Bros. film series, which has already a confirmed sequel in the works. Stay tuned for more as it comes.
