A few months ago, Nintendo was forced to cancel their Nintendo Live Tokyo 2024 event after receiving “persistent threats” targeting employees and attendees.
As reported by Splatoon Torikara and translated by Oatmealdome, the culprit behind the threats has been sentenced to a 1 year prison sentence (4 years suspended) for his crime.
In total, the culprit sent 39 bomb and death threats to Nintendo. A statement from the company was also read out in court, stating that the employees were “terrified” and were reminded of the infamous Kyoto Animation arson case from 2019. The presiding judge further declared that the culprit’s motive was “selfish” and his crime was “persistent and malicious”.
The 27-year old suspect was arrested back in April 2024, and admitted that his actions were driven by stress and frustrations from losing at a videogame. Although not explicitly stated, it is heavily speculated that the game he was referring to was Splatoon 3, which was planned to host a major tournament during the Nintendo Live Tokyo 2024 event.
