Last year, The Pokemon Company releases Pokemon Scarlet And Violet to massive commercial success. However, many critics and fans voices criticisms about many aspects of the games, including the graphics as well as the many bugs and performance issues, some of which continue to affect their enjoyment of the titles to this day.
These issues have since sparked heated debate among Pokemon fans about whether or not The Pokemon Company should slow down the release of mainline Pokemon games. All five sets of mainline Pokemon games released on the Switch have received mixed reception from fans for one reason or another, and many believe that giving the developers more time on fewer titles will lead to higher quality games overall.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, The Pokemon Company’s Chief Operating Officer Takato Utsunomiya acknowledged that they have been adopting a schedule of “constant releases” thus far, but there have been more and more internal discussions about how they can continue this strategy while ensuring “really quality products” for fans. Utsunomiya cites changing “development environments” as something that comes up in these discussions, presumably referring to the increasing complexity of game development.
“I think in general, if you look at the past, the path we’ve taken up until now has been this constant release, always regularly releasing products on a fairly fixed kind of a cadence, you might say. Always having these products able to be introduced and new experiences for our customers, and that’s how we’ve operated up until now. I think we’re still operating in that way, but there’s more and more conversations, as the development environments change, about how we can continue to do this, while making sure that we’re ensuring really quality products are also being introduced.”
Overall however, Utsunomiya’s response suggests that The Pokemon Company does not currently intend to move away from the “constant release” schedule, although it is somewhat reassuring that “quality” is being acknowledged as a problem for the games. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
