This year, Nintendo and Universal released The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which turned out to be a runaway hit that no one, including Shigeru Miyamoto himself, expected.
Last week, Barbie, one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, finally premiered at the box office. But how did Barbie do compared to The Super Mario Bros. Movie?
According to box office data, the Barbie movie collected USD155 million in its opening weekend in the US, and USD337 million globally. On the other hand, The Super Mario Bros. Movie took in USD204.6 million in the US, and USD377 million globally in its first weekend. This clearly shows that the Mario plumbers are ahead of Barbie at its premiere, and we’ll have to wait and see how Barbie does in the months to come.
Keep in mind that The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered in Japan and Korea at a later date, so numbers for both countries aren’t included in the global tally.
