Niantic and The Pokemon Company have announced the long awaited arrival of a new Trading, Friends, and Gifting systems for Pokemon GO, which will be added later this week.

To become friends with another trainer, simply enter their Trainer Code and send them a request. You’ll send them on your friend list once they’ve accepted your request. You can add up to 200 friends.

There are multiple things you can do with your Friends. One of them is the new Gifting feature. Trainers will now have a chance of receiving a special gift when they spin a Photo Disc at a PokeStop or Gym. While you can’t open any of these gifts, you can send one to a friend. Inside a gift is a stash of helpful items and an egg that contains an Alolan form of a Kanto region Pokemon.

An important component to the Friends system is called Friendship Level, which can be increased by participating in a raid or Gym Battle with a friend or by sending them gifts. You can increase your Friendship Level once per day with a friend. You’ll earn special bonuses when participating in a raid or Gym Battle with a friend that has high Friendship Level with you.

Friendship Level ranks include Good Friend, Great Friend, Ultra Friend, and Best Friend.

Now here’s how trading is going to work. You can trade with friends who are level 10 or higher that are near you (within 100 meters) in real life. Trading requires Stardust, and some trades require more Stardust than others. You can build your Friendship Level by trading with a friend. The higher your Friendship Level, the less Stardust you need.

Both you and your friend will earn Candy from trading. The higher the distance apart the traded Pokemon caught are, the more Candy you get.

Lastly, you’ll need to perform something called a Special Trade whenever you wish to trade Legendary Pokemon, Mythical Pokemon, Special Pokemon, Shiny Pokemon, or Pokemon not in your Pokedex with a friend. Special Trades can only be performed once a day with a Great Friend or Best Friend.
