Tribute Games’ Panzer Paladin Combines Zelda II Swordplay With Mechas, Launches Spring 2020

Tribute Games, known for their works on Mercenary Kings and Flinthook, has revealed that their next retro-inspired, action-platformer Panzer Paladin is now in development for consoles!

This 8-bit style action-platformer allows players to control both the Paladin power armor together with the Squire pilot. Players will be able to fight their way through challenging levels wielding the Paladin armor. But to give more gameplay variety, players can also eject and play as the small but swift Squire to access narrow corridors that would otherwise be unreachable when donning the Paladin suit. In addition, the game lets players equip and utilize an array of weapons dropped by defeated enemies and the ability to cast spells by breaking weapons, among others.

Here’s what Tribute Games designer Jonathan Lavigne had to say:

“For a long time I wanted to make a NES-style game with swordplay mechanics like the ones from Zelda II on NES. Panzer Paladin is the culmination of two subjects I wanted to address in a traditional platformer: swordplay and mechas. A strong aspect I also wanted to include in this project is the various usage of an array of weapons. A little bit like in our previous title Mercenary Kings.”

Panzer Paladin is slated for release in Spring 2020.

Tribute Games revealed today their next game: Panzer Paladin, an engaging 8-bit style action-platformer with fun and intuitive swordplay. Hop in the Paladin power armor, seize melee weapons from the demonic invaders and give ’em a taste of their own medicine!

The title and logo were revealed on Tribute Games social media with the very first illustration of the powerful Paladin power armor and the small but swift Squire pilot. Players control the Paladin to fight their way through levels but can eject and also play as the Squire to swing across gaps and recharge the Paladin’s energy.

The Paladin swordplay mechanic includes the ability to equip and use any weapon dropped by defeated enemies, high versus low attacking and blocking, a rock-paper-scissor weapon type system that grants attack bonuses, and the ability to cast spells by breaking weapons. Weapons abound in levels, so the player is encouraged to use them profusely.
