There is a traditional notion, especially in the Asian sphere that video games decay your mind. The idea is that if you could waste time tomfoolering around with video games, you could spend the time studying. But what if video games actually improve you cognitive power instead of decaying it.
According to Newsweek, a recent study showed that playing 3D video games like Super Mario 64 actually increases the amount of grey matter in the brain. In fact, it is able to reverse the reduction of grey matter in the brain.
3D video games engage the hippocampus into creating a cognitive map, or a mental representation, of the virtual environment that the brain is exploring,” study author Gregory West, an assistant psychology professor at the University of Montreal, said
in a statement.
Grey matter in the brain is exceptionally important, on top of, increasing cognitive power, it also decreases the likelihood of neurological illness such as Alzheimer’s disease.
