Wayforward Discusses Shantae 3D Platformer Possibility, Game Difficulty, Lore, And More

Earlier today, Wayforward held an AMA for Shantae, where Shantae co-creator Matt Bozon answered various questions from fans about the series.

The questions asked covered a wide variety of topics, including the upcoming Shantae ports for Switch as well as the future of the series in general.

You can find the full thread on r/gaming here, or read some of the highlights below:

Q: What made you decide to make Seven Sirens and Half Genie Hero targeted towards new players of the series? Will we ever see another Shantae game that dives deeper into the lore like Risky knowing Shantae’s mom, and harder gameplay?

Bozon: I’d love to get back into that, and have been exploring those story lines recently. I tried to keep Sirens a little on the light side difficulty wise, since we are dealing with a wider audience than usual, and throwing a lot of new ideas at them. But, I also miss the “classic” difficulty.

Q: Will you ever consider a full 3D Shantae platformer? I know that 3D Platformers are a monumental task to handle, but I always thought it would be interesting to see one based on Shantae!

Bozon: Sure, we’ve talked about doing that a lot since the N64 days. There’s nothing stopping this from happening (well, other than lots of time and money). So it’s a possibility.

Q: Question for the release of the first Shantae: Will the Switch version have any bonus features or fancy menus, or is it just the game on startup?

Bozon: There is a front-end, it doesn’t just boot directly into the game. You’ll be able to pick whether or not you want to play with the GBA enhancements, and we’re working on getting some bonus stuff in there too.
