During the recent Cedec+Kyushu 2018 event, Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii shared his thoughts on the Dragon Quest series in the west.
Horii was upset that many people in the west are unfamiliar with Dragon Quest, and hopes it could become more popular in the future. He believes one of the reasons why it didn’t catch on as it did in Japan is because Square Enix didn’t bring older titles to the west sooner. Horii added that this was due to the long period of time required for localization.
Later, Horii cited The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a good example of how going off the game’s rails can be a lot of fun. Finally, he ended off saying that Dragon Quest XII is still many years away from release, so in the meant time players should check out Dragon Quest Builders 2.
