Realistic Pokemon artist R J Palmer is back with more concept art that he worked on for the Detective Pikachu film!
This time, Palmer tweeted out several pieces of concept drawings for both Charizard and Venusaur, from the movie’s planning stages. Apparently, Palmer had more creative freedom at first, but eventually had to tone down some of his more unnerving designs – such as Venusaur’s.
Charizard was the very first thing I worked on and also one of the last. Charizard has always been one of my favorite designs. It was super cool to see what the finished effects for Charizard looked like. His animations were so good!

This was my design for Venusaur on Detective Pikachu. This was during a period where I was free to explore a more naturalistic approach. Looking back though its super clear that this would be too scary for the tone of the movie. I think the design they ended up with is fabulous! pic.twitter.com/SSekVKI47D
