Let’s see what’s biting.
Aksys games is bringing a physical versio of Fishing Star World Tour for Nintendo later this Fall and I got the chance to try out the game. I’ll be going over my first impressions of the game after trying it out.
The game’s story is driven by your journey to catch 180 kinds of fish, unlock more than 70 types of fishing gear, and travel to 40 fishing locations. Fishing Star goes for a generally realistic look with a 2D artstyle which helped me enjoy the fishing experience.
It’s one of the few games that utilizes the Toy-Con to fish but there’s also fun to be had with just the Joy-Cons. As someone who’s never fished before, the game did a great job of pulling me into the action with motion controls.
Both Joy-cons worked together very well for the mechanics of casting a line, reeling it in, and fighting a fish to keep the line from breaking. While the motions weren’t perfect, they generally reacted very quickly while giving me a good sense of resistance from the fish on the line. One Joy-Cons acts as a rod and the other as the gear to wind up the line.
I could see this game being a fun time with the family or if you just want to feel engaged by motion controls. The variety of fish and fleshed out mechanics such as bait, rods, and lines that you can select add a level of complexity to keep the game from becoming stale quickly. Overall, the game surprised me with how entertaining it could be with such a simple premise.
The physical version of the game releases this coming September 26th for $39.99
