A game developer has created an analysis video uncovering the tricks developers used to make Rainbow Road in Mario Kart World.
The course makes heavy use of a video game development technique called ‘culling’ not just for optimization, but to hide portions of the track from players. For instance, the second part of the track isn’t visible to the player at other parts of the track, even though it’s close to the start and finish line. This helps preserve the element of surprise.
