Guide: All You Need To Know About Mario Kart World’s Free Roam

In Mario Kart World, players will be able to enjoy a new mode called Free Roam. In this guide, we’ll show you everything that you need to know about this new mode.

What is Free Roam?

In Free Roam, players can freely explore courses and routes in the world of Mario Kart World at their own time and pace. Free Roam can be accessed through the title screen or the game menu. It can also be played while waiting for players to select their courses in online and local multiplayer lobbies.

You can play Free Roam alone, or together with friends online and via local multiplayer.

What can you do in Free Roam?

There are many things you can do in Free Roam. You can explore courses to find various shortcuts and secrets, as well as to collect coins. You can also use this time to practice wall riding and rail riding, two techniques new to Mario Kart World. There are also missions to complete – completing them unlocks a decal for your vehicle. You can also eat Dash Food to unlock outfits for various characters.

There are also two things you can do in Free Roam – using Photo mode (take photos of your character and surroundings with special filters), and using Rewind to practice wall riding and rail riding.

Special things you can do in Free Roam

In Free Roam, you can access a few special features not found in other modes.

Special vehicles

Special vehicles such as a large truck, large helicopter, and large boat can be used for about 20 seconds in Free Roam to drive long distances.

Binoculars

In every course, you’ll find a pair of green binoculars. Drive up to the binoculars to get a bird’s eye view of the course.

Types of collectibles

There are three types of items you can collect in Free Roam – coins, Peach Medallions, and decals.

Coins in Free Roam behave the same way as coins in other modes – they give you a small speed boost and are added to the total number of coins you’ve collected in the game. You can unlock various items, including new karts, by collecting coins. If you want to collect a large number of coins, you should try looking for ? panels on the ground and driving up to them.

Peach Medallions are special coins that are exclusive to Free Roam, and there are a few to collect in every course. Collecting one medallion unlocks one decal.

Decals can be unlocked by completing P-Switch missions, special missions, and driving over ? panels on the ground.

Types of missions

Here are a few types of missions you can try in Free Roam.

P-Switch missions

Start a P-Switch mission by driving to a blue P-Switch. There are a variety of missions, such as reaching the goal within a certain time frame and avoiding obstacles.

Nabbit mission

You can find Nabbit walking in circles in various courses. If you get close to Nabbit, he’ll start panicking and running around the course. Drive and hit Nabbit with your vehicle to unlock a Nabbit decal. This decal can only be unlocked once.

Charging Chuck mission

Sometimes, you may find a Charging Chuck riding a bike around routes with the word “TARGET” above his head. This particular Charging Chuck will leave a trail of item boxes with green shells in them. Shoot the Charging Chuck with an item, such as a green shell, to unlock a Charging Chuck decal. This decal can only be unlocked once.

Types of unlockables

Here are several different types of things you can unlock in Free Roam.

Decals (driving)

You can unlock decals by driving long distances in Free Roam and other modes. Driving in Free Roam is a good way to unlock these decals.

Decals (Peach Medallion)

You can unlock a decal by collecting a Peach Medallion.

Decals (? Panels)

You can unlock a decal by driving over a ? panel.

Decals (missions)

By completing P-Switch missions, you can unlock decals.

Outfits

You can unlock outfits for your playable characters by eating certain Dash Food. This is a good way to unlock every outfit in the game as you can easily change your character in the pause menu.

Karts

You can unlock new karts to use in the game by collecting coins. You unlock a new kart at every 100 – 200 coins.
