39 years ago on April 28, Nintendo released Game & Watch, their first ever portable video game console that would mark the company’s entry into video games.
The Game & Watch was invented by Gunpei Yokoi. Unlike other Nintendo video game systems, the Game & Watch only contained one game, clock, and/or alarm. To play other games, you need to purchase other Game & Watch systems. There were dozens of Game & Watch systems released in different button and screen configurations.
Some of the popular Game & Watch games of all time include Ball, Chef, Fire, Octopus, and Donkey Kong Jr. Nintendo sold 43.4 million Game & Watch systems worldwide to date.
