Here’s Why DOOM Eternal Isn’t Called DOOM 2

A few days ago, Bethesda announced DOOM Eternal, a sequel to DOOM for Nintendo Switch.

Given that DOOM Eternal is a sequel to DOOM, some wondered why the game wasn’t called “DOOM 2” instead. During Quakecon 2018, id Software’s Marty Stratton explained that when the DOOM reboot was released for Switch and other platforms, many people called it “DOOM 2016”.

If id Software went with DOOM 2, Stratton and his team feared the Internet will call the game “DOOM 2: Year of release date”. Hence to avoid that from happening again, they went with DOOM Eternal.

Creative director Hugo Martin added naming the game DOOM 2 would make searching for the game online very hard. Martin also revealed how the Eternal subtitle was chosen:

“(asked the marketing team to come up with something) that had meaning and spoke to what we were doing with lore and how we want people to feel about the game. And Doom Eternal was something that just felt right.”
