Back in 2019, IDW Games announced that they were working on a board game adaptation of Konami’s iconic Bomberman video game franchise.
Although it was originally planned to release in 2020, we have since received confirmation that the project has been cancelled. This news comes via Tower Games’ Sean Mcdonald, who was one of the designers working on the Bomberman board game. He also shared a picture of the prototype that he created before the plug was pulled:
In the same Twitter thread, Mcdonald also went into detail about how the game would have been played. It was envisioned as a turn-based experience where players would design their own maps with traps and blocks, as well as drop bombs and earn powerups using colored tokens.
That said, at the time of this writing, it seems the Contra board game is still on track over at Blacklist Games. Hopefully, that project will fare better than Bomberman‘s did.
