It has been 24 weeks since the Nintendo Switch launched in Japan and the entire world. The hybrid console has sold over 1 million units thanks to Splatoon 2 and a lineup of big hits in recent months.
Besides beating Nintendo’s own expectations, the Nintendo Switch has been beating its other home console rival, the PS4, really badly. A quick analysis shows Nintendo Switch sales in Japan have outpaced the PS4 by 2 to 1.
In its first 6 months, the Nintendo Switch sold a cumulative total of 1,436,031 units. On the other hand, the PS4 only managed to move 653,377 units during its first 6 months. This means the Nintendo Switch has sold more than double the units PS4 did in the same duration of time!
Here’s a look at how each console has sold in their first 24 weeks.

If Nintendo is able to deliver at least 80,000 units weekly to the Japanese market, there’s a high possibility the Nintendo Switch would cross 3 million units sold in Japan alone. All Nintendo needs to do is to fix the shortage before the end of this year.

More, we need that Number needs to be bigger!!!!
Hope the same happens in the US too!
Honestly this comparison is neglecting the actual market situation in Japan. The PS4 sold worse than the Vita & Wii U in Japan in its first year. It sold absolutely miserably. Secondly, the Switch is selling like a successful portable in Japan, and now thanks to Nintendo resolving some stock issues, is actually selling about as well as the 3DS prior to the price drop. We'll see how it compares to the 3DS post price drop, but I'm sure it'll all be up to stock.
Definitely, we only compared the numbers in the first 6 months of each console. Thank you for providing your insights, ZSaber.
Saber the Switch is also out selling the 3ds. It's becoming Nintendo's best selling console. The Switch is also catching up to the ps4 in america.
You would never compare handheld sales against home console sales, it's no different when comparing Switch sales against PS4 sales. All of a sudden, the Switch has become a home console when it's clearly not. The Switch is a handheld and basically has no competition. Apparently, home consoles don't do too well in Japan and that includes the PS4, even the PS3 hit average sales. The Switch has replaced the 3DS, not the Wii U. Nintendo has killed off home consoles and stuck with handhelds.
