Nintendo might have overestimated the demand for Yoshi’s Crafted World in Japan.
Media Create has released a new report this week on videogame sales, and it zeroed in on the new cutesy platformer from Nintendo. While the game topped out software sales charts at 53,327 units sold in its first week, this was only 35.96% of the game’s initial shipment. For contrast, we’ve seen more niche titles such as Super Robot Wars T sell through 60% of their shipments on day one alone.
Furthermore, sales of Yoshi’s Crafted World in Japan apparently did not drive the sale of Nintendo Switch consoles, either. In fact, Media Create reported that only 50,367 Switch hardware units moved this week – the console’s weakest week in Japan for 2019, so far.
For now, it’s hard to tell if Nintendo simply printed too many copies of the game – or if more Japanese gamers are just buying the game digitally. We’ll report back when a fuller picture of the game’s performance emerges down the line.
