Last year Mari Mobility, previously known as MariCAR, registered a trademark called “Unrelated to Nintendo” in order to fend off Nintendo’s copyright infringement lawsuit.
Today we have learned that on February 7, 2020, Mari Mobility tried to register a trademark called “Unrelated to NinOOODo” (任○堂は無関係) with the Japanese patent office, but it was flat out refused because the patent office was concerned that it could cause unnecessary confusion and most people would know that the missing kanji represents 天, so people would read it as “Nintendo” anyway.
