Earlier this week, Nintendo announced that they would be increasing the price of the Switch 2 console later this year, with the hike hitting Japan first from May 25th 2026.
Following this news, there is reportedly now a mad rush in Japan to secure the console ahead of the price hike. X/Twitter user @peroni1212, shared pictures from Yodabashi Camera Umeda, where a long line formed comprised of customers trying to get a Switch 2. @Genki_JPN has also claimed that scalpers have already started selling the Switch 2 online at the increased price.
Elsewhere, industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto reported that retailers have started taking measures to manage the demand. His example Bic Camera is now limiting sales of the console by requiring customers to use its own branded credit card to buy Switch 2 and Switch consoles, a measure seemingly meant to stop mass buying of consoles ahead of the price hike.
We are likely seeing this happen in Japan primarily because the price hike is coming so soon after the announcement. Elsewhere in the world, the price hike is only set to hit in September, giving customers more ample time to prepare and make a purchase decision.
