Last year, LEGO and Nintendo teamed up to launch a series of official LEGO Super Mario sets which allowed fans to play their own brick-built Mario courses with interactive figures of the iconic plumber and his foes.
Since then, the sets have proven to be a massive success for LEGO Group. According to their latest annual financial report, LEGO saw its fastest sales growth in five years for 2020., and LEGO Super Mario was apparently a big contributor. Within the report, LEGO CEO Niels B. Christiansen had this to say about LEGO Super Mario:
In 2020, we saw early benefits of these investments. A strong, diverse portfolio attracted builders of all ages. The launch of LEGO Super Mario introduced an entirely new way to play and was one of our most successful new themes.
Given its success, it seems likely that we will see more Super Mario themed LEGO sets being released in the coming years. Speculating further, perhaps this will extend to other major Nintendo franchises like Zelda or Metroid as well.
