The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma teased Nintendo’s plans to recreate a Game Boy Classic three years ago.
In an interview with Edge back in 2016, Aonuma stated “Actually, Nintendo has been telling me to create a new IP. But then, they’re also telling me to make more Zelda games.”
“I can’t really share much; I’m not sure I’m allowed to say anything. But I really like the idea of a game where I can live as a thief. That’s all I’ll say.”
Little did we know that these words referred to a game that we wouldn’t know about for a while.
Three years later, EDGE issue number 336, the director was questioned about this previous statement. When asked if he had been hinting at the Link’s Awakening remake, Aonuma immediately laughed in response to the question before admitting he had indeed hinted at this game.
This will likely only be obvious to players who have played Link’s Awakening already. The word “thief” tease refers to relates to a scenario with the shopkeeper that results from your decisions.
Didn’t understand that reference and to possibly experience it for yourself? Fear not since the Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will release exclusively for Nintendo Switch worldwide on September 20th.
