A Look At The Patent Nintendo Claims Colopl Infringed

Back in January, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against mobile game company Colopl for infringing on five of Nintendo’s patents in Colopl’s mobile RPG White Cat Project. The incident even resulted in the hashtag “DO NOT FORGIVE NINTENDO” to trend on Twitter in Japan.

However, now we got to take a closer look at the patents which Nintendo claimed Colopl infringed.

1. The first patent deals with the special technology used to operate a joystick on a touch panel
2. Patent 4262217  – The patent covers a game’s character attack behaviour when the touch input has been lifted. This is a UI patent.
3. Patent 4010533 – This patent deals with a confirmation screen before the device is returned from sleep to wake mode. Patent was filed back in 2001
4. Patent 5595991 – This patent details the detection of playable multiplayer games in local or internet multiplayer
5. Patent 3637031 (pictured above) – This patent covers the showing of opponent orientation when the camera is position in a way that the opponent is obstructed (e.g. by a wall)
