Earlier this month, Nintendo turned up on the stage of CEDEC 2020 in Japan to reveal some interesting developments behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons. We’ve already gotten a look at how the company designed the game’s adorable characters – and now, we have some intriguing tidbits about its playerbase as well!
During the presentation, Series head Hisashi Nogami touched upon what kinds of people were playing the game – revealing that they were actually mostly in their 20s and 30s, as opposed to smaller children. What’s equally surprising is that the gender split was roughly 50-50 between male and female players, according to their data (see the image above):
“What would the public imagine if they were asked what kind of game Animal Crossing is? I think there is probably an image of ‘a game where you can live leisurely with cute animals’ and ‘a game for young girls’,”
“However, looking at the gender and age data of Animal Crossing users, it is clear that the ratio of males and females is half and there are many users in their 20s and 30s.”
Nogami then added that it was possible that not as many younger children managed to obtain the game yet, because it has not yet been available during key holiday seasons.
“Since it has not been a year since it was released, it has not been possible for many children to buy it, but for the moment it is a game with a user group that’s likely different from your expectations,”
