Activision Blizzard has published a new roadmap for Overwatch 2, which reveals that the long anticipated PVE Hero Mode has unfortunately been scrapped.
The roadmap details plans for Seasons 5 to 7, which includes the addition of Story Missions, which will serve as a substitute for the originally planned story-based PvE Hero Mode. In an interview with Gamespot, Director Aaron Keller and Executive Producer Jared Neuss confirmed that the Hero Mode as originally advertised had been scrapped. According to the two, developing Hero Mode as the team envisioned was proving too challenging, with the required time and resources “pulling focus away from the live game”.
In light of this, the team decided to shift strategy and focus entirely on the live game, and divert all of their efforts on the PvE mode to the upcoming story missions that will debut in Season 6.
Keller: In reality, what we were looking at was running two separate games at the same time with a set of Heroes as the piece that is shared between two of them. And as we started to get further and further into it–obviously our players could realize that we were pulling focus away from the live game–but it just didn’t look like there was a definitive end date in sight where we would finally be able to put that stamp on [it], or that end date was years away and it no longer felt like we could be doing that to our players, or we could be doing that to the live game that we were running. And that’s when we took the moment to shift strategy and put everything into the live game.

This decision will likely come as a disappointment to many fans, as Overwatch 2 was originally marketing based on this PvE Hero Mode. Whether or not the Story Missions will serve as an adequate substitute remains to be seen.
