New Pokemon Snap Director Discusses How Pokemon Were Chosen For The Game

New Pokemon Snap is just a few weeks away, and at the time of this writing, we know 119 out of the 200+ Pokemon that will be included in the game.

Speaking to GameInformer, New Pokemon Snap‘s Director Haruki Suzaki discussed a little bit about how his team selected which Pokemon to include in the title. According to Suzaki, they used the theme of “Pokémon in their natural habitats” to guide their decisions, starting out with considering what interesting natural environments could be researched, then moving on to how different Pokemon might live and thrive in these habitats.

I absolutely wanted to keep the foundation of the base gameplay where everyone can have fun just looking at Pokémon thriving in nature and taking snapshots of them.

The selection of Pokémon was truly hard, my vision was to create a world where you can actually imagine wild Pokémon thriving in their natural habitats and ecosystem. At first, we thought about Pokémon’s natural habitats and fascinating landscapes and climates to research. Then, we narrowed down our choices by balancing out how different Pokémon would live in these habitats and their relationships within each environment. As a result, there are more than 200 Pokémon, rich in variety, appearing in this game.

Although a little over 200 Pokemon seems like a small selection out of the 898 that currently exist, New Pokemon Snap features over three times the number of Pokemon included in the original Pokemon Snap for the N64, which only had 63 Pokemon from the series’ first generation.
