Nintendo “Aggressively” Tried To Cut Costs To Get The Switch Lite’s Price Below $200

Earlier this month, Nintendo finally released the Switch Lite, a less expensive, purely portable version of their smash hit Switch console.

Currently, the Switch Lite sells for around $200 each, already a lot less than the regular Switch which goes for closer to $300. If a report from the Wall Street Journal is to be believed, Nintendo tried extremely hard to cut costs in order to reach an even lower price point. One unnamed supplier apparently fought for months with Nintendo over the price of an important part for the console:

Suggesting Nintendo’s eagerness to capture the low end of the market, suppliers say the company aggressively tried to cut costs and weighed a price tag below $200. An executive at one supplier said it battled Nintendo for months over the price of a key component.

In addition to pulling in new customers, it seems likely that Nintendo is also trying to bring back members of the 3DS userbase who passed on the Switch due to the new console’s higher price point. With the Switch Lite having just been released, we will just have to wait and see if Nintendo’s strategy will succeed.
