Nintendo plans to make “significantly more” SNES Classic units than NES Classic

For gamers and ordinary consumers, the NES Classic Edition has been pretty hard to find due to low supply and high demand. The NES Classic was planned to be a limited time item for the holiday season, and despite more units getting out to consumers until April 2017, demand wasn’t fully met. Many are worried that the same situation will repeat with the SNES Classic Edition.

Kotaku reached out to Nintendo, asking how many units they planned to manufacture for the SNES Classic Edition. Here’s what they said.

We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year.

Our long-term efforts are focused on delivering great games for the Nintendo Switch system and continuing to build momentum for that platform, as well as serving the more than 63 million owners of Nintendo 3DS family systems. We are offering Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition in special recognition of the fans who show tremendous interest our classic content.

Based on what Nintendo has said, this gives everyone roughly 3 months to purchase a SNES Classic Edition. Although we didn’t get an exact figure, hopefully “significantly more” means everyone would be able to snag one without disappointment.
