Nintendo Plans To Continue Releasing Games For Switch, Not Bound By “Traditional Concept Of The Platform Lifecycle”

During Nintendo’s latest financial results briefing, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa shared some comments discussing the future of the Nintendo Switch.

As the Switch enters its eighth year on the market, Furukawa said that Nintendo plans to continue to release new titles and content for the Switch, “without being bound by the traditional concept of the platform lifecycle”. Presumably, this comment is referring to how Nintendo and other console makers typically retire a console after several years on the market, replacing it with a more powerful version.

“Nintendo Switch will be entering its eighth year in March 2024, we will continue to release new titles and content for Nintendo Switch without being bound by the traditional concept of the platform lifecycle. Going forward, we would like to continue to see many consumers play Nintendo Switch, and to maintain our business momentum.”

Furukawa’s statement comes amidst a swirling of rumors that Nintendo is planning to release a successor to the Nintendo Switch soon, several of which he denied the accuracy of during the financial results Q&A. Although not entirely ruling out the possibility of a “Switch 2”, Furukawa’s words do suggest that the transition might not be as straightforward as Nintendo’s previous console generations. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
