Nintendo has assumed full ownership of Monolith Soft, the creators of the Xenoblade Chronicles franchise.
This information comes from a report from Automaton Media. Referring to Monolith’s official website, Nintendo is listed as owning 100% of Monolith Soft’s shares, essentially making them the new owners of the company.
Monolith Soft was originally created by founders Hirohide Sugiura, Tetsuya Takahashi and Yasuyuki Honne back in 1999 with investment from Namco. In 2007, Nintendo bought out 80% of the company’s shares, eventually increasing their ownership to 96% in 2011. It seems Monolith Soft’s founders kept ahold of the remaining 4% up until at least March 2024 this year, but it is not known exactly when Nintendo completed their acquisition.
Aside from working on Xenoblade, Monolith Soft has served as a support studio for many of Nintendo’s games, most famously The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. With the completion of the acquisition, it seems likely that we will see Monolith being tapped on to work on more Nintendo projects in the future.
