Nintendo Sues Two Piracy ROM Websites For USD150,000 Per Game

Nintendo of America has filed a lawsuit against two websites involved in distributing video game ROMs illegally on the Internet.

The websites are LoveROMS.com and LoveRETRO.co. Nintendo’s lawsuit, filed in the federal court of Arizona, states that the company hopes to shut both websites down and requests statutory damages of USD150,000 per infringing Nintendo game and up to USD2,000,000 per trademark infringement.

Nintendo has also requested that both sites immediately stop all infringing activity and have their domain names handled over to them. They also want the operator of both sites to reveal how they’ve gotten their ROMs.

Here’s what Nintendo has said in their complaint:

The LoveROMs and LoveRETRO websites are among the most open and notorious online hubs for pirated video games. Through the LoveROMs and LoveRETRO websites, Defendants reproduce, distribute, publicly perform and display a staggering number of unauthorized copies of Nintendo’s video games, all without Nintendo’s permission. Defendants are not casual gamers but are instead sophisticated parties with extensive knowledge of Nintendo’s intellectual property and the video game industry more generally.
